Prior to recording the album Ace held at least two demo sessions for material for the album with Anton Fig, who had been put in contact with Ace by a bass player trying out for Anton's band, Spider. This early 1978 demo session was Anton's first connection with anyone from KISS putting to rest any suggestions that he had anything to do with the drumming on "KISS Alive II" in late-1977.

Chart Action:

Chart Peak (USA): #26 (1/13/79) with 23 weeks on charts. Other countries: AUZ #48; CAN #34; JAP #30.

RIAA/Sales:

"Ace Frehley" was certified gold and platinum by the RIAA on 10/2/78. It has sold over 46,000 copies since the SoundScan era commenced in 1991. The album was certified gold by the CRIA (Canada) for sales of 50,000 copies on 12/1/78. Contemporaneously, Casablanca had shipped 1,387,852 copies of Ace's album by the end of June 1979, including 18,739 picture disks (the most of the four band members).

Performed Live:

"New York Groove" (along with another then new Ace vocal, "2,000 Man") was performed by KISS during the 1979 "Return of KISS" tour in support of "Dynasty." Ace has also performed more than half of the album throughout his solo career. "Rip it Out" was the very first song performed by a newly solo Frehley's Comet at their debut gig at S.I.R. Studios in New York City on November 30, 1984. During the early years of that band, Ace was careful to balance his sets in favor of his new solo material, rather than relying overly on KISS songs, or even those from the 1978 album. Part of this, most likely, was a result of the limited set times he had available as an opening act, though once he was essentially back in the clubs for the "Trouble Walkin'" tour more legacy material started to be added. In his second post-KISS career "Snow Blind," with a "I Want You" ending tag, has regularly been included (it had first been performed in 1990), and even the "Fractured Mirror" instrumental has made an appearance (other than being used as the intro to the show). "Speedin' Back To My Baby" has often been included as part of a medley in addition to being fully performed.
